The Secret to Managing All the Rechargeable Devices in Your House

Picture this:

Five iPhones, seven iPads, four wireless headphones, five pairs of AirPods, two MacBooks, five portable batteries, and a Yoto mini player—all needing to be charged daily. That’s a whopping 29 rechargeable devices fighting for outlets in our house!

While we’ve embraced technology (in moderation), I have adopted a no-electronics-in-the-kids’-bedrooms rule. Why? Because good sleep habits matter. Flashing notifications and audible alerts can wreak havoc on deep sleep, interrupting the rest we all desperately need to thrive.

So, what’s a tech-filled household to do? Plugging devices into every available outlet wasn’t sustainable. We needed a solution—something smarter, more organized, and family-friendly.

Enter: the DIY Wall-Mounted Charging Station.

After some research and a bit of DIY ingenuity, we installed a dedicated charging area in our mudroom. Five months later, it’s proven to be an absolute game-changer. Devices go on their chargers at night—out of sight, out of mind—and our family tech rules stay intact.

Bonus- When friends come to visit and need a quick charge, there’s no scavenger hunt for the right cable, we know right where to plug in.

Want to Build Your Own? Here’s What You’ll Need:

  1. Pegboards

    • I used IKEA’s pegboards that you can also find on Amazon. But Pegboards can be found at your local craft and hardware store too!

  2. Magazine/Document Holders

    • Perfect for organizing iPads, laptops, and phones, this one offers amazing versatility!

  3. Hooks & Metal Clips

    • Great for hanging bags, lanyards, or small accessories. I grabbed these from IKEA, but you can find similar options on Amazon in a variety of colors here.

    • Metal Clips are great for papers, photos, and those field trip permission slips you don’t want to lose!

    • Use these longer hooks for bulkier items too.

  4. Anker Power Strip/Surge Protector

  5. Zip Ties

    • Use zip ties to keep cords tidy or to attach your power strip to the pegboard if you don’t want to mount it directly to the wall.

  6. Cord Clip Organizers

    • Keep extra cord lengths hidden behind the pegboard with these or make cable ends easy to locate near your device port with these. A good cord management system keeps your setup looking clean and clutter-free.

  7. Charging Cables

  8. Portable Batteries/chargers:

    • I used to think portable chargers were just another unnecessary gadget—until they became lifesavers during all-day basketball tournaments. When littles need to recharge an iPad, Yoto, or, let’s be honest, my phone, these devices are a game-changer. We absolutely LOVE these two from Anker:

      1. Mag-Safe Power Bank with kickstand

        • My favorite for my iPhone! It’s sleek, portable, and the built-in kickstand is perfect for hands-free use while charging.

      2. Anker Zolo Power Bank

        • This powerhouse features built-in Lightning and USB-C cables, plus an additional USB port, allowing you to charge multiple devices at once.

This DIY project is simple, effective, and completely customizable to fit your space. Ready to tackle your tech clutter? Let’s do this!
